Ingredients:

  • 6 cups peeled and sliced apples
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Toss until the apple slices are evenly coated.
  2. Optional: Sauté the coated apples in a baking dish over medium heat for 5 minutes until they begin to soften, then remove from heat.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Stir in the whole milk and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth.
  5. Fold in the melted butter until fully incorporated.
  6. Pour the batter evenly over the apple filling in the baking dish, ensuring the batter sits on top without stirring in the apples.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling.
